Origin
Doi Wawee
Chiang Rai Province, Northern Thailand
Throughout northern Thailand there are many old, abandoned tea plantations that have been left to grow wild from centuries past. Known locally by the Thais as “Assam tea,” these trees are part of an ancient tea journey that traces its roots back to the 11th and 12th Centuries. It is thought that the Bulang and Dai ethnic peoples were the pioneers of tea in this region and both groups planted tea seeds wherever they migrated. In more modern times, ethnic Han Chinese from Yunnan settled in the region and became stewards of the ancient tea tree forests and plantations. They began to produce tea in Doi Wawee according to Yunnan Pu’er tea practices and traditions. At this time, the village of Doi Wawee is glorified by tea lovers and is known as, 茶房 or “the village of tea.”

This tea is really wonderful. Having recently gotten into the world of loose leaf tea and different brewing methods , I'm a novice at best .
Being a "coffee snob" I've been intrigued by the world of tea and the many different varieties. As my journey into this new realm moves along, I found this tea just doing a quick search online.
I'm really happy with this tea. Its smooth, has a nice color and a very pleasant flavor. Now that I'm getting better at brewing methods , like gongfu and using cups that highlight the different "notes" of various teas, I'm really enjoying this newfound interest! I know I'll be trying other Oolong teas in the future, I think I've found my favorite one, this one!
I'll definitely be ordering from Rishi Tea & Botanicals , they have given me great tea and customer service

Unfortunately, what was once my favorite tea appears to be no more. If you have an old bag of if lying around, you'll notice that the old one says it's from Doi Mae Salong in Thailand, whereas this new tea is from Doi Wawee. I honestly think this might be an entirely different grower, the taste is so different. I like the tea, honestly, it's perfectly nice, but it's very different. It's much more floral, it almost has a lychee undertone to it. Time to hunt around on reddit for alternatives I guess!

We really appreciate your keen palate - it's clear you know this tea well! You're absolutely right that sourcing can make a significant difference in flavor profiles, and we understand how disappointing it can be when a beloved favorite changes. We're glad to hear you still find this version pleasant and are experiencing those lovely floral and lychee notes, even though it's not quite the same as the Ruby Oolong you fell in love with. Our Customer Service Team would be happy to share more regarding our current sourcing of this special profile, and help with recommendations that might capture some of those characteristics you loved about the original, please don't hesitate to reach out!
