No matter which energizing tea you choose, each from Rishi is a welcome addition to your daily ritual—select from loose leaf teas, sachets or tea powders like matcha. Each tea in this collection offers a flavorful, aromatic infusion with a distinct sense of origin, cultivar, ingredient and craft.

How to Enjoy Energizing Teas

At Rishi, we appreciate that tea is an art while acknowledging that each person who joins our community may have their own perspective and interpretation of the craft. With that in mind, we often offer preparation and accompaniment recommendations to consider as you tailor your tea experience to your personal taste.

Tea Type Affects Preparation

Tea type plays an important role in preparation because each style of tea is crafted differently and contains unique compounds that influence flavor extraction. Delicate green and white teas are typically brewed with cooler water to preserve their fresh, nuanced character, while black teas and many herbal blends can withstand hotter temperatures for a fuller infusion.

Oolong teas often benefit from a range of brewing approaches depending on their oxidation level and style. For the best experience, we recommend following the preparation guidelines provided with each tea and adjusting brewing time, water temperature and tea quantity to suit your personal taste.

Tea as a Ceremony

As you explore the world of tea, consider the experience of tea preparation itself, including the rich traditions behind the art of brewing tea. Many of our energizing teas have origins rooted in traditional tea preparation ceremonies, from energizing “High Teas” to solemn meditative practices. For example, select roots, botanicals and herbs have long been used with tea for their energizing properties in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.

Preparing ceremonial matcha is one example of Rishi’s celebration of teas used for focus and meditation; another favorite botanical of South America is Yerba Mate. Yerba mate is an herbal tea with naturally occurring caffeine, and it has a distinct profile and a time-honored history of ceremonial consumption and ritual in parts of South America.

FAQs

In general, black teas tend to contain more caffeine than oolong, white and green teas, while botanical teas are often naturally caffeine-free.

That said, one of our herbal teas with caffeine is Yerba Mate, a botanical blend that contains a moderate amount of caffeine. Its robust flavor profile and naturally occurring compounds contribute to a vibrant, awakening cup that many enjoy as an alternative to coffee.

At Rishi, we never add caffeine to our herbal teas, nor do we decaffeinate our teas. If you are looking for a naturally caffeine-free infusion with bright, revitalizing character, consider botanicals such as peppermint, ginger or rooibos.

Most of the caffeine in tea is extracted during the first infusion, though additional steeps could still contain some caffeine. Many tea drinkers enjoy steeping energizing teas multiple times to experience how the flavor and character evolve from infusion to infusion.

Generally, yes. Caffeine is highly water-soluble and begins extracting almost immediately when tea leaves come into contact with hot water. As steeping time increases, more caffeine is extracted, along with other compounds like tannins, catechins and amino acids. However, a large portion of the available caffeine is released relatively early in the infusion, so extending the steep time from 3 to 5 minutes typically increases caffeine less dramatically than extending it from 30 seconds to 3 minutes.

The caffeine in tea is the same naturally occurring compound found in coffee. What makes tea unique is the presence of other compounds found in the tea leaf, including L-theanine, an amino acid that’s associated with the balanced and focused character that many tea drinkers appreciate. Tea can also be more hydrating, which can also make that caffeine boost feel more sustained than a quick “jolt.”

No. L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid found in “true teas” made from Camellia sinensis, and it is not considered a stimulant. Many tea drinkers value L-theanine for the balanced character it contributes to the tea experience and often associate it with a sense of calm focus. When paired with the naturally occurring caffeine in tea, L-theanine is part of what makes tea distinct from other caffeinated beverages.
