Typically, when brewing Japanese teas, you will need to swiftly reduce the water temperature to brew the best cup of green tea. Often used are cooling pitchers or yuzamashi. This cooling pitcher is made from Tokoname pottery, and is not glazed, but finished with a slip coating. Slip is a water-thinned clay applied like a paint which is referred to as being “brushed.” The raw material has special iron, quartz, and mica content. The special function of the Tokoname pots are heat reduction speed and low porosity.

Not only can this cooling pitcher function as a traditional yuzamashi, but thanks to the material and shape, it can also be used as a sharing pitcher or Cha Hai for gongfu tea brewing and serving.
