About this tea

This original Hubei green tea known as Yu Lu (Jade Dew) is produced according to an old style, artisan method of steaming, kneading and gently roasting green tea that renders an attractive pine needle shape and a deeply satisfying taste. Yu Lu was a Tribute Tea during the 1700s in Qing Dynasty China. Yu Lu is considered one of the historical precursors of sencha and gyokuro adapted by Japanese tea makers. Yulu Jade Dew has a vibrant energy and smooth taste with rich layers of umami. The aroma and aftertaste have a special presence and balance of fresh alpine and toasted almond.

This early spring micro-lot really highlights the richness and fresh taste of the Long Jing #43 cultivar grown organically in the remote alpine terroir of Xuan’en, a mountainous region of Southwestern Hubei that is famous for its remote forests and Taoist temples. During the 1600s and 1700s, monks and explorers from Japan traveled in this region to study Taoism and Buddhism where they also experienced this unique style of green tea processing. They took inspiration from the Yu Lu style of steaming, kneading and roasting of tea leaves back to Japan where sencha and later gyokuro was developed.
