Taiwan handmade master teapots are uniquely crafted products. This Yixing clay teapot is mostly crafted from rock ore and fired between 1100 and 1200°C. The teapot has a thicker body and good heat preservation. The surface is a bit more porous than other clays, which can easily absorb the taste of tea and alter the characteristics of the tea. For deeper baking teas, such as Ruby Oolong or Tieguanyin (Nong Xiang), it can reduce the aromas of the firing and create a softer mouthfeel. This would not be recommended for high fragrance teas Four Seasons Spring or Gao Shan Cha (Qing Xiang), as the nature of the clay will reduce the amount of aroma and create a heavy bodied brew. Spend time brewing tea to allow the teapot to absorb the essence and essentially cure the teapot. This concept is often referred to as 養壺 “feeding the teapot.”
The calendar system used since ancient times is based on a system called “The 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches.” Each combines with one another to form 60 cycles in a pattern, which is referred to the stem-branch calendar, equal to 60 years.
This system is still frequently used today for creating calendars, astrology, calculations and naming other aspects of time keeping. The year cycle that corresponds to when this teapot was created is the 辛丑 Xin Chou, or Earth Ox Year.
