How to Care For Porcelain, Glass and Clay Teaware

We offer a large variety of unique brewing vessels, serving vessels and accessories, each with unique care requirements.

Porcelain Porcelain is one of the easiest materials to care for. Simply wash with hot, soapy water with a non-abrasive sponge and allow it to air-dry before you use it next.

Glass Glass is also easy to clean and maintain the quality of the teapot or teacup. Use hot, soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge to gently scrub it clean. For some glass teaware, you can even clean it in the dishwasher. Dry it with a microfiber towel for a streak-free clean. Allowing glassware to air-dry can result in water spots or staining.

Clay Clay requires the most care, but natural clay pots are some of the highest quality and specialty vessels available. To care for a clay teapot, wash only with hot water and do not use soap, as natural clay is a porous material and can absorb the flavor of the soap you use, as well as washing away hard-earned seasoning on the interior of the pot. Clay pots should be left to air dry on an absorbent towel before you put them away.

FAQs

Teapots made of porous natural clay will absorb some of the flavors and oils of the tea brewed in them. Over time, natural clay pots will begin to develop a “seasoning” from previous tea brews, softening the texture of the water and imbuing further brews with unique aromas.

A basic tea kit typically includes a serving vessel (such as a teapot or infuser) and tea cups. More specialized kits may include items such as tea filters, tasting spoons, or cooling pitchers.

Matcha is typically prepared with a matcha bowl (chawan) and whisk (chasen). Matcha is measured and sifted with a bamboo scoop (chashaku), and served either as a hot water tea or as a milk latte.

Unfortunately not. Since many of our clay products are handmade with natural clay, we suggest hand washing them for longevity and quality. The porous material is delicate and can absorb flavors from the dishwashing cycle, as well as potentially breaking from the aggressive wash.
