Organically Grown Oolong Tea

Renowned for their delicate florality, nuanced earthiness and pleasant sweetness, these unique and carefully crafted Oolong teas are an excellent addition to any tea cabinet. At Rishi Tea & Botanicals, we work closely with farmers to procure and share the most unique and interesting Oolong varieties we can find.

How to Brew Loose Leaf Oolong Teas

The Oolong variety is a delicate, slightly oxidized tea, which benefits strongly from a short and slightly gentle brew time. We suggest brewing 1 tablespoon of loose leaf tea (~7 grams) with 12 ounces of 185ºF water for 3 minutes, which will result in a well-brewed, delicate and nuanced tea. These teas also tend to be less astringent or tannic than black teas, due to their more delicate processing.

FAQs

The term “oolong” is a transliteration of the Chinese words for “black” and “dragon,” an apt description for the dark, curly shaped leaves of this tea. The darkness of the tea comes from the oxidation process, which also defines the tea variety. Oolongs are partially oxidized (between 8-80%), meaning that the extent of oxidation falls somewhere between green and black tea.

Rishi Tea & Botanicals are proud to source teas through our unique Direct Trade Process, which allows us to create long term, authentic and dedicated partnerships with farmers and tea producers throughout the world.

Originally a tea cultivated during the Ming Dynasty for the Emperor, this tea has gained widespread appeal for its flavor, history and tradition. Today, Oolongs are cultivated around much of Asia, spreading to grow in India and Nepal, as well as China.

This tea varietal tends to have a middling amount of caffeine, less so than black tea and about equal to green tea. While a typical cup of coffee will have 80-120 mg of caffeine, an 8 ounce cup of Oolong will contain only 20-60 mg of caffeine.
