Rooibos was traditionally harvested by the Khoisan nomadic ethnicities of South Africa and is known for its high levels of oxidants. The earliest records of rooibos use are from the late 1700s when the Khoi-Khoi people were observed using the plant medicinally. Rooibos is part of the legume family and is found in dry mountainous regions with periodic heavy rainfall. Today, rooibos is grown exclusively in the Cederberg Mountain region of the Western Cape. Rooibos is rich in minerals like iron and also contains unique phytochemicals that have caught the attention of scientists in studies. Recently, some clinical studies suggest that compounds found in rooibos tea can be beneficial in reducing certain types of stress. Aspalathin and nothofagin are the main active constiuents, or flavonoids, found in rooibos. These flavonoids have been studied for years as powerful antioxidants.
